What are your rights?
As an Employee:
After five hours of continuous work, a teen between the ages of 14 and 18 should receive a thirty minute break for a meal and rest period. A teen who is a student in school may be employed for a combined school and work week of no more than 48 hours.
A minor under the age of 16 may be employed for up to 8 hours per day, 6 days per week, and may not be employed between the hours of 9 pm and 7 am.
A minor 16 years of age or older may be employed for up to 10 hours a day, 6 days per week, and may not be employed between the hours of 10:30 pm and 6 am on school days. However, a minor 16 years of age or older who is a student in school may be employed until 11:30 pm on any of the following days:
- Fridays and Saturday
- During school vacations
- During periods when minor is not enrolled in school
Know Your Rights About Discrimination:
Race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, marital status, height, weight, arrest record, or physical and mental disabilities cannot be used as justification for not hiring, promoting, or for terminating a worker.
Baby Drop-off Law:
There is a Michigan State Law known as the Safe Delivery Program. This law allows a parent to drop off a newborn less than 3 days old at a hospital, police, or fire station without getting into trouble. The infant must be given to a uniformed worker or otherwise identified employee of the facility. For more information call 1-866-733-7733.
